My soon-to-be four year old and I have been learning a new letter each week during our almost daily preschool session (about 30 min to 1 hour). We also do art projects and brush up on our shapes and colors. It is fun and he looks forward to it most of the time. He has asked once "may I be excused", which only made me smile and realize maybe I should make our little "school sessions" more exciting.

This week it is the Happy Hippo letter H! I use a Preschool Workbook by Mead, which has worksheets for letters, sounds, colors, shapes, sizes, art, early math, and more. Today after we practiced writing our Hs, I brought a bag full of different Hats and let him try them on and look into a small mirror, he thought is was Hilarious. For our art project, we made a chef Hat and he painted a pizza that I drew on cardstock (I later thought a hamburger would have been a better choice afterall it starts withhhh ____).

Leah really should be writing this post, she is the school teacher of the family and has done some really terrific preschool sessions with her daughter and cousins(my son included). She is currently tending to a new beautiful baby girl who decided to come a month early. They are both doing wonderful. Since she is a tad busy, here are a few things I have learned.

1. Prepare yourself ahead of time, pick out worksheet and gather supplies before you begin. I do some brainstorming the night before.

2. Choose the best time of the day, mornings seem to be the best time for him and I try to do it while my baby( who is almost one now, wowzers!) is taking a nap. If he is awake he is a good marker snatcher.

3. Break up your activities, move around the room if possible for different activities.

4. Review, review, review. I might ask him, "Ok, before we start painting can you tell me what letter we are learning?"

5. Be flexible and don't stress over it!

This was tucked in one of the boxes and was a nice little surprise.

I recently attended my first auction...wait, scratch that, I have actually been to two other auctions that I remember both with my dad. The first auction my dad purchased two horses, one was a mare that my sister and I later got bucked off. She actually was a sweet horse, just a little squirrely on occasion, don't we all get a little squirrely on occasion? The second auction I attended, my dad bought my older brother and sister a car, which was also know as the "tank" aka a huge granny car that was really safe LOL! So really this was my third auction, first auction as the buyer.

I went with my dad and brought along my best helper, my three year old little boy. He fit right in and would stand there with the old men and silently watch an old vacuum cleaner sell for a couple bucks. Auctions are so funny, people just stand around and watch to see what an old chain, a box of what not, or an old moped might bring...the moped was cute and purple by the way.

I had already picked out a couple boxes that I wanted to bid on, but I could tell it was gonna be awhile. I knew my chubby nursing baby at home would be getting hungry...so I decided to place an absentee bid on four boxes/collections and wait until the morning. I scored three of the four bids that I placed and was so excited. Lets just say I look forward to my next auction.

So back in April, Leah and I thought it would be fun to be chicken owners and of course our children would be our fine partners.

We remembered having chickens as tweens and just knew our kids would love it as much as we did.

The day arrived, we hauled two toddlers and a baby to the first feedstore, no luck all out of chickens, dang! So to the second store we headed, SCORE...we left with six brown hens, six black speckled hens and two unknowns that were yellow.

They were so cute!

This little chicken farmer named his black speckled hen, Chloe.

Yes, Chloe survived.

This little chicken farmer named her yellow "unknown" Chick, Chick.

We nurtured and cared for our little chicks and also prepared the chicken coop, located in our parents barn. We think it is a five star coop :). Needless to say, the chickens grew rapidly and eventually made their way into the new coop.

We were so eager to receive our first egg from our once babies...it finally arrived small and cute like they were when they were babies.

{The big eggs are from some hens we adopted from friends and the little eggs are from our baby chicks...not so baby anymore}

These little guys are so easy and fun to make.

They would be perfect for a tween/teen craft project.

Supplies:

Mod Podge (matte finish)

Small Paint Brush

Fabric Scraps

Clear Glass Rocks *clear is best, not pearl or colored

Pen

Scissors

Round Magnets

Step 1: Turn the right side of fabric down and trace around your glass rock with your pen.

Step 2: Cut out each circle on the inside of the pen line so it doesn't show.

*Just a note, if you are using a fabric with a fun pattern you may consider placing the graphic in the center of your circle, as shown above.

Step 3: Apply a generous amount of Mod Podge to the front of your cut-out. Next press the cut-out onto the back side of your glass rock.

Step 4: Once your fabric is placed on the back, apply a generous amount of Modge Podge to the back.

Step 5: Apply the magnet while the Mod Podge is still wet. Allow to dry 24 hours face down (magnet side up)

Your image may appear blurry, but no worries, once the mod podge is dry it will be clear. You can also use a damp cloth to remove any excess modge podge that may be on the front or side of the rock.

Step 6: Complete. Find a spot to put your really cute magnets or give them away as a gift.

* You don't have to use fabric, you can use scrapbook paper, sheet music, old books, or print words/initials on paper...have fun.

Today is Mother's Day...what a special day. I always wanted to be a mother and a good one too. I would say, that motherhood is a tough job, but one that is noble and right. Often times I feel I fall short as a Mother, but am always willing to try a little harder. I know the work I am doing as a mother has great influence and that influence is power.

I feel blessed or "we" I should say, (because I know Leah would say the same) to have such a strong and lovely Mother. I love her because she does so much good, has always expressed her talents and creativity and is always willing to learn new things and I know she loves us.

Victor Hugo is attributed to saying

"She broke the bread into two fragments and gave them to her children, who ate with eagerness. She hath kept none for herself, ' grumbled the sergeant.

" 'Because she is not hungry,' said a soldier.

" No, 'said the sergeant, 'because she is a mother.' "

Happy Mother's Day to everyone...we all can impact the lives of the little ones.

We decided at the last minute to whip up some Fabric Canvas Wall Art as a donation for a literacy fundraiser. We thought they turned out pretty cute...the pictures don't express their total cuteness.

The top canvas was covered in Riley Blake's Summer Song Orange Stripe fabric. We added a vinyl bird(which could also be painted) that mimicked the bird found in Riley Blake's Summer Song Trees in White fabric shown on the lower canvas.

You can find instructions here of how to make a fabric covered canvas with a painted silhouette. They are so fun and easy to make.

My little girl dressed with LOVE.

I have to admit this was my first time to use a pattern. Usually, I get an idea in my head and start cutting and sewing. I love the feeling I get when I look at fabric for the first time. I run my hands over it and hundreds of images go through my head of what I could cover, sew, or drape. I couldn't resist making a Spring dress using Paradise Garden in wine from Amy Butler's Love Collection. Wanting everything to turn out just right, and only sew one, I decided the best option was to use a pattern. I loved the way everything lined up in it's proper place. I think I will venture out and try a few more..... maybe just add my own embellishments.

A Treat For Your Nose

Nestled on a quiet street in Waurika, Oklahoma sets a store that could be used as an old western movie prop. Inside Small Town Creations I was greeted by a warm smile and a friendly Southern "hello". This quaint little store is home to, in my opinion, some of the best smelling candles.
Get ready for your nose to dance with scents like, Buttery Toffee, Creme Brulee, Dreamcicle, Fresh Cut Roses, Fresh Linen, Country Clothesline, Downy Mountain Spring, Pomegranate, Plumeria, and much, much more.

Each candle is hand poured to perfection. Being cautious of the environment after your candle has burnt, bring your jar back to Small Town Creations and they will pour your favorite scent for a small price per ounce.

I am lucky enough to have a sister that lives in the area, so when I go visit my nose gets to twitching. I can't leave without stocking up.

Tutorial - Cookie Envelope

Supplies:
1. Paper cut to 8" x 8" square
2. Pencil
3. Cookies
4. Double stick tape
5. Optional: Embellishments (stickers, ribbons)

*Feel free to get creative in the type of paper you use: scrapbook paper, vellum, textured paper, pages of old books, sheet music, magazine pages.

Position your 8" x 8" paper like a diamond, as shown above. Measure and mark with a pencil, 3 inches from the top point on each side; do the same to the bottom point. Indicated as here.

Next, using the marks you made above, fold the two side corner in along those marks. You can now erase those pencil marks.

Once your two side corners are folded in, fold down the top corner, placing the point approx. where the two sides form a triangle, in this case a white triangle.

Do the same to the bottom corner, but first raise the top fold up so you will know where to place your point and make your fold.

Four folds later, you will have something that will look like this. Place a cookie or two inside, if you haven't already eaten them. Fold side corners, bottom corner, than top and fasten with double stick tape or a sticker.

Add ribbon and a sweet message.

These cookie envelopes could be used as handouts for birthdays, showers, or any other special occasion.

Sewing Tip of the Month - Pinking Shears

According to Apparel Search the cut produced by pinking shears has given it's name to "pinks", hardy carnations named for their petals "pinked edges". The color pink was then named after these flowers.

A Few Tips About Using Pinking Shears

Before pre-shrinking your fabric cut the edges of your fabric with pinking shears. This prevents the fabric from fraying in the wash.

KarmenG at Pattern Review gave this great tip: " When trimming various seams and inner construction, use pinking shears to remove excess fabric. This method softens the edges and eliminates a straight line impression should you over press or your fabric is somewhat shear".

Here is a little sewing project I almost had complete before the new babe arrived. It was my first time sewing a diaper bag and it was fun. If only I could find a spare minute between feedings, diapering, daily chores, and attending to my other little sweet guy to finish it.

It is lacking the straps...someday.

I used Jennifer Paganelli's Sally in Orange and Jenean Morrison's Santa Barbara in Blue. I loved how they look together. There are two big pockets on the outside for my keys, phone and wallet.

The inside.

I wish I would have taken a better picture(maybe straightened out the sides). It has four big pockets...can't have too many pockets.

Here is the big brother. He has been so sweet to his little brother, when his brother cries he makes silly faces to try to make him feel better, he's a cutie. Baby "J" continues to cry, but I sure smile.

So a silly face for you...have a HAPPY DAY!

Well here's a few tips to ease your burden.

1) Pick a dry location not subject to direct sunlight to keep your fabric.

2) Sort your fabrics by color.

3) Fold Fabrics neatly
(and try to keep them folded...i know once you get going creatively the mess begins)

4) Pick the right storage container to store your fabrics.

Here's a few containers we have like!

Plastic storage containers laying on their sides are a great way to add extra shelving, and keep fabrics organized into smaller color groups.
These containers can be found at Moma Store(Martha Stewart)

The Quilt Gallery suggests using clear plastic storage containers stacked on top of each other to store fabric, plus you can label them by color, pattern, etc...

"Fabric Storage Sheets" found at Polar Notions are acid free re-usable plastic sheets used to minimize the space your fabric takes up.

The Container Store provides a stylish fabric covered tote with an easy zip action for convenient storage. Your fabric would be hidden, but these totes are equipped with a spot for labeling and could be stylishly left out in almost any room.

Cindy at Quaint Handmade found this dresser at Sage Street Antiques and used it to organize her fabric...isn't it so cute.

Sewing Tip of the Month - Choosing the Right Pin

Pins, Pins, and more Pins

Such a small instrument with a very big job to do. How many different pins do you have in your pin cushion? According to the magazine Threads each pin has its own purpose.

Pins and Their Purposes

Flat: This pin may be pressed with iron, and is good for handwork because the thread does not get caught on it.
Plastic: These are ball-shaped and come in different colors and sizes, very easy to spot laying against fabric. Plastic pins also come in flower shapes which are good for lace, eylet and loose weaves.
Glass: Ball-shaped and will not melt when pressed against iron, whereas plastic pins may melt.
T-Pin: Used to hold heavy upholstery and outdoor fabrics.
Fork: Allows you to pin without lifting fabrics.
Glow in the Dark: If you drop the pin, turn the lights out to find it. No more finding them with pain.
Tidy: Created to secure doilies, slipcovers to furniture.
Pleating: This pin is 1 inch long allowing you to pin out perfect pleats.
Twist: This pin is created to hold slipovers and mattress pads in place.

My belly is getting bigger and bigger and bigger...seems only right since the little guy is going to be entering this great big world in just a little over a month. It will be such a treat to be blessed with another little boy. In the meantime, while he is quietly warm and cozy in the womb, this momma has to wear something. I couldn't resist the captivating pattern of Anna Maria Horner's Small Gatherings Azalea fabric and decided it would be fitting as a maternity skirt. I used a simple skirt pattern along with some tutorial help from Sew Mommy Sew for the elastic waist band. I love it.

One of my favorite food blogs to visit is Our Best Bites. I mean check out the beautiful photos below of Holiday Treats...yummy! Not only are their pictures tasty, but their recipes are most scrumptious. So I haven't really been making all these holiday treats, but instead have been doing a little sewing related to baking that counts right? I whipped up two aprons as gifts for my sisters (not Leah the model) but the other two.

Hello, Erica here. Anytime my sweet little guy is in need of a present for a little girl, I pick the girliest fabric I can find, and start sewing something. The little apron above was for a little blond three year old Birthday. This the first apron I have made with a big chunky ruffle along the bottom, I normally add a smaller ruffle along the edges and a little pocket, both are cute. I used the ever darling Leann in Red and Kayla in Blush by Jennifer Paganelli...I think they are like two peas in a pod together. I used a fat quarter for the front and approx. a 1/2 yard for the back, ruffle and tie. I wouldn't mind having one in my size, perhaps my dinners might even taste a little better ;)

P.S. apparently girliest is not recognized as a word, but that's OK, I am pretty good at using words that don't really exist.

Message Board & Calendar Holder Tutorial

GIVEAWAY

My message board design evolved from the shape and size of salvaged wood I retrieved from a local cabinet maker. I often get long narrow pieces and wanted to come up with something that would hold a calendar and this was it. The elastic band was added for the purpose of holding messages, invitations, and appointment cards.

And now you can make your own with this nifty tutorial.

SUPPLIES
~ wood
(you can use any size that will work with your calendar, mine is 15"w x 4"h)
~ fabric
~ staple gun
~ felt
~ nail
~ glue gun(not pictured)
~ cup hook 1/4"
~ elastic (I use cotton elastic)
~ sawtooth hangers
~ rotary cutter
~ mat
~ quilt ruler
~ pencil
~ decorative embellishment (optional)

This is my decorative embellishment to be added to the front of the elastic band. I made my own flower pattern and cut it from felt and added little pearls for the center, cuteness.

{1}

On one side of your wood piece find the center and mark with a pencil--this will be the bottom of your message board. * You can also mark the back of your wood so you remember which end is the bottom it can come in handy when you add your embellishment to the front.

{2}

Place your nail on your pencil mark and hammer the nail in about 1/4", this hole will be used to screw your cup hook in. *If you are using a really hard wood you may need to drill a pilot hole instead.

{3}

Cut your fabric piece to be approximately 2" larger then your board on all FOUR sides. *This will make your fabric four inches wider and taller. Place your wood centered on your fabric piece. If you are using a repeat patterned fabric like mine, you will want to line your wood evenly with your pattern.

{4}

Pull your fabric over your wood firmly on the center of one side and staple, repeat this to each side.

The center of all four sides stapled should look like the above picture.

{5}

Continue to staple around each side--making sure to pull the fabric tightly while stapling so the fabric is nice and snug to the wood. *You can alternate your sides to keep your pattern even. Your staples should be relatively close together, once you have stapled along each side you will have little flaps of fabric on each corner.

Taking care of the corners. Pinch the corner fabric together.

With you corner piece pinched, pull the piece tightly over the top and to the back and staple 2-3 times. It will create a little triangle as shown in the picture above.

Once all four corners are stapled, cut the excess fabric to reduce bulk on the back.

All cut.

{9}

Add your elastic band by placing it on the back centered and staple multiple times. Pull your elastic band around the front tightly and staple to the opposite side.

Band added.

I did not add pen holders to the tutorial message board but they can easily be added after your band is added. Simply cut two elastic piece about 2" long and create a little loop and staple the ends multiple times to the back of your wood. I generally place them about 3-4" from the side. *See the above picture for an example, you can even sew little buttons to the loops if you want.

With a rotary cutter, ruler and mat cut a felt piece approximately 1/4" smaller than the size of your wood on all FOUR sides. *Your piece will be a 1/2" smaller than the width of your board and 1/2" smaller than the height of your board.

Using your glue gun run a small bead along the top of your felt and glue to your on all four sides.

{12}

Add your sawtooth hangers to the back.

{13}

Add your embellishment with needle and thread.

{14}

Remember that hole you made with your nail, using the same nail find the hole and puncture the fabric. By using a nail you reduce the chances of the fabric running.

{15}

Screw your cup hook into the hole previously made.

{16}
